Know Your Skin

Two Main Categories
of Acne.

Acne manifests in different forms, each requiring specific treatment approaches. Understanding whether you have inflammatory or non-inflammatory acne helps us create the most effective treatment plan for you.

Inflammatory acne involves redness, swelling, and often pain, while non-inflammatory acne appears as clogged pores without significant inflammation.

Personalized treatment for each acne type

Evidence – based therapeutic approaches

Comprehensive care from diagnosis to clear skin

Inflammatory Acne
Cystic Acne
Cystic Acne

Cystic Acne

The most severe form of acne. Large, painful, pus-filled lumps develop deep beneath the skin, caused by trapped bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells. Can persist for weeks and often causes scarring.

Treatment Approach

→ Non-prescription clinical treatment — targeted extractions, high-frequency therapy, LED light treatment, and a customized at-home product regimen.

Nodules Acne
Nodules Acne

Nodules

Hard, painful lumps deep under the skin. Solid nodules form when clogged pores damage deep tissues. These firm bumps can be large, take weeks to heal, and are stubborn to treat.

Treatment Approach

→ Non-prescription clinical protocol — specialized extractions, high-frequency therapy, and a skincare routine built around your triggers.

Pustules Acne
Pustules Acne

Pustules

Inflamed, pus-filled bumps with a red base and white or yellow center. Tender to touch and form when pores become infected with bacteria. Avoid popping to prevent scarring and infection spread.

Treatment Approach

→ Gentle extractions, high-frequency therapy, and a non-prescription regimen to calm inflammation and prevent recurrence.

Papules acne
Papules acne

Papules

Small, raised red or pink bumps that are tender to touch. Form when oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells damage pore walls. Often appear in clusters as an early inflammatory acne sign.

Treatment Approach

→ Non-prescription anti-inflammatory care — customized treatments and a targeted skincare routine to reduce redness and prevent new breakouts.

Non Inflammatory Acne

Blackheads (Open Comedones)

These are small, distinctly dark spots that sit flat against the skin’s surface, entirely free of redness, swelling, or irritation. Far from being trapped dirt, the dark substance filling the pore is actually a hardened plug of excess sebum (oil) and shed dead skin cells. When this mixture reaches the surface of an open pore, exposure to the air triggers a chemical process called oxidation, causing the trapped debris to turn a characteristic dark brown or black.

Treatment Approach

Dissolving the plug from the inside out with targeted exfoliation, while preventing new congestion from forming

Whiteheads (closed comedones)

Dissolving the plug from the inside out with targeted exfoliation, while preventing new congestion from formingThey’re completely free of pain, redness, or swelling, but have one critical structural difference that changes how they must be treated: a whitehead is completely covered. These appear as small, distinct, flesh-colored or slightly whitish bumps sitting slightly raised against the skin.

Treatment Approach

You need a two-pronged strategy: peel away the surface covering and speed up cellular shedding.

Root Causes

What Causes Acne?

Acne rarely has a single cause. Here are the most common contributing factors.

Hormonal

Fluctuations in androgens stimulate oil glands, causing excess sebum. Common during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause.

Bacterial

Overgrowth of Cutibacterium acnes in clogged pores triggers inflammation. The most common underlying driver of inflammatory acne.

Fungal (Malassezia)

Overgrowth of Malassezia yeast in follicles — often mistaken for acne. Requires antifungals, not standard acne treatments.

Mechanical (Acne Mechanica)

Friction, pressure, or heat on skin from helmets, straps, or tight clothing. Includes maskne from prolonged mask use.

Drug-Induced

Certain medications like corticosteroids, lithium, anabolic steroids, and some contraceptives can trigger or worsen acne breakouts.

Dietary

High-glycemic foods and dairy are linked to increased breakouts. Growing research supports the connection, though individual responses vary.

Stress

Stress raises cortisol, stimulating oil production and worsening existing acne. More of an aggravator than a standalone cause.

Cosmetic (Acne Cosmetica)

Pore-clogging (comedogenic) ingredients in skincare or makeup build up in follicles, typically causing persistent small whiteheads.
